Startup Weekend St. John’s – It all starts with an idea!

by

I had the opportunity to meet with a great group of individuals at the NATI social last evening who asked me some questions about the Startup Weekend St. John’s event. Some of the questions revolved around what happens during a Startup Weekend so I referred them to our previous blog post What the heck is this Startup Weekend event all about.

The other common question that I was asked was “Do I need an idea?”. The short answer is No, you do not need an idea. Register, attend, join a team, and build something!

However, don’t let this whole idea thing scare you. Some, if not most of the great ideas we ever hear about started in a very simple form. As an example, this is an idea that I presented in 40 seconds last night. It’s not great or even really that good but you’ll get the point.

“Hi! I’m Jason and my idea is to build an iOS game that takes advantage of the gyroscope features to control movement. The premise is to climb a series coconut trees to collect coconuts. You move up, down, and back and forth using the motion of the device and you have to avoid the evil monkey that is throwing things at you. If you get hit or if you touch the monkey, you die. I’m looking for 2 developers, a designer, and a marketing person to help me launch CoCo the Mad Monkey.”

When you arrive at the Startup Weekend St. John’s event you will start to feel the excitement and energy very early on. The fun really does begin as soon as you arrive and start to meet people. However, the real excitement starts to build around 7:30 PM when the “Pitchfire” session starts. Anyone intending to pitch will have 60 seconds to give their best pitch. No presentations or props needed for Friday. It will just be you and a mic. After pitches are finished, all attendees will vote on their favorites, and using these votes the top ideas will be selected to be worked on over the weekend. Teams will form organically, consolidate, and begin working.

The following is a youtube video of a simple pitch. Again this is not meant to be the best or even a winning pitch. It’s just an average person like you and I giving a very simple pitch that could end up being worth some very valuable prizes or even more.
